Wax instead of shaving: The darkness of the underarm skin could be due to thickening of the hair in armpit due to shaving.
Stop using deodorizers: The inflammation of skin due to the chemicals in deodorants can also darken the underarm skin.
Talk to the doctor: Sometimes home remedies may not help if you have a condition called acanthosis nigricans that leaves dark markings in the area. This condition could be due to a glandular problem or due to obesity also found in people with diabetes and commonly in people of African descent. This problem could also happen due to growth hormone therapy, pituitary gland disorders, Addison’s disease, use of oral contraceptives and hypothyroidism.
Doing things like changing your diet if it is diabetes related, or stopping oral contraceptives could help if these are the root of the problem.
You could get a prescription of alpha hydroxyacids, Retin A 20% and salicylic acids but these are only of limited use. The use of hydroquinone is something that is done for lightening the skin and you can buy these with prescriptions for higher concentration and over the counter for lesser concentration. Always buy products that are tested and those that can be trusted. So do read the labels and do some research before buying anything.
Some cautions: In case you do not have hyperhidrosis, then it is normal to have the skin darken when the layer of skin is really thin. It is not something that you need to concern yourself about and do not be swayed by what you see on screen where women have the benefit of photoshopping and special effects.
Doing things like too much exfoliation or bleaching is not good for you in the long run and can result in scarring. You could suffer from infection of the follicles, sweat glands, pores etc.
