Essential vitamins for women at every age: From 20s to 60s
When in the 50s
- Multivitamins: This is the time where you start taking multivitamins that are formulated for this age range. This is due to the fact that the iron component for people of this age group comes down and the vitamin B12 component goes up keeping in mind the changing needs in terms of nutrition.
- Calcium: Women who are above 50 in age the recommendation is to take 1500 mg of calcium on a daily basis.
- Vitamin D: Following the patterns of calcium, the dosage of Vitamin D also needs to go up, in this case up to 800 IU daily. It is good for overall health particularly that of the bones. Plus women in this age have reduced ability to produce Vitamin D through exposure to sun.
- Vitamin B12: The need for vitamin B 12 goes up after the age of 50 as the intestinal tract is not able to absorb vitamin B12 in the way the younger digestive tract would be able to. You need to have 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B12 daily after the age of 50. You can do this by eating foods that are fortified and/or take a supplement that has Vitamin B12.
